Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968), was an American civil rights leader who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia, United States, on January 15, 1929. His father was a Baptist minister and so was his grandfather. He was married with two sons and two daughters.
He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1948. Originally planned to become a doctor of medicine, he decided instead to become a minister, receiving a BA in Theology. He graduated with a PhD in Boston University, and began taking seriously philosophy of non-violence. In effect, he became a strong advocate of Mahatma Gandhi, known for Non-Violence discipline. He became politically active.
In April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee, in support of a sanitation workers' strike.

There is a US public holiday in his honor, "Martin Luther King Day" - the third Monday in January.
