- Lakoff
I'll give Lakoff kudos for understanding the significance of FRAMING in public discourse. The problem is that he (and you) often accuse only conservatives of framing, and ignore the fact that liberals and progressives do it as well. Everyone frames. The key is to be honest and open about it.
But Lakoff sees government as being much, much more involved in actively providing for the welfare of the people than most of our Founders would be comfortable with. I don't want to label Lakoff a "socialist," but he does tend that way.

- Lakoff
Vaguely familiar with his work overall, but I've come across quite a few quotes from him in different things. And I've in the last couple of days looked up more info on him. I know that Lakoff doesn't like labels, but are you going to deny that he's progressive and socialistic?

Lakos asks nearly every possible question in regards to freedom. And, he tries to answer every one. I've gone through the first five chapters at least twice and the first three several times.
.
I particularly like the way he answers the question regarding a definition of Conservativism and Liberalism in America.
.
He uses the metaphor of family as it is so much a part of what we, in America, think about our nation and our relationships with each other. We think of ourselves as being the children and of government as being the parent in a certain sense and this is the area in which he makes his definitions. Conservatives follow the line of the Strict Father while Liberals follow the line of the nurturant Parent. Neither side is at the extreme and most Americans are somewhere in the middle exhibiting characteristics of both sides.
.
I think that is a good way of looking at the issues involved. I think most Aouth and North Americans think along these lines--from Canada to Chili.
