- Francis, a great thinker?
At first glance, it seems a no-brainer. Of course, Francis of Assisi was a great medievil thinker.
But I beg to differ! If we look carefully at his life, Francis was a mystic and a doer. If he were alive today, the temptation on the part of straight-thinkers might be to lock him and his followers away in a safe place. He was really a radical and revolutionary who suffered great personal torment.
The 20th and 21st century have made Francis into a do-good, feel-good saint. How many among us would have liked to travel with him, tended his bleeding feet and washed his smelly woolen socks?
All said and done, Frances is my favorite saint and my patron to boot! If you are looking to be a radical and revolutionary, he's your guy ![]()
The same could also be said of most modern Franciscans [http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/06217a.h...
