- Happy Birthday Virginia!
"You've also just "reminded" me to re-watch my video of "The Hours", that one with Nicole Kidman in the role of V Woolf, and also stars Meryl Streep.
Come to think of it, I think I don't have a copy of "Portrait of a Marriage" but have an old video of "Orlando."
Had no idea that the movie "The Hours" had to do with V.W.; will definitely watch it without husband who has an aversion to what are loosely called here "chick flicks" here in the U.S.
I will have to search and see if I can find a video copy of "Orlando;" interestingly, "Portrait of a Marriage" was made into a TV version by the BBC [219 min / UK:55 min (4 episodes)] in the late 1980s; released in a cut version (at least in U.S. New England in 1990. I first saw the series in England and then again in the U.S. so I do know that the second version I saw was cut.
It would be wonderful if you could ever travel to England...you'd appreciate some of the gardens (and homes) of the National Trust in the southeast so much...Ellen Terry's Place and Knole as well as the two I've mentioned.
BTW from the National Trust site "Knole features as one of the lovely locations used for filming 'The Other Boleyn Girl'" arelatively new book.
My links don't work because the program the Suite uses cuts them if they are too long. I'll have to go back to my original message and see if I can do something about the links.
Cheers!

1) Access Amazon.com and then type in "Portrait of a Marriage"
2) Access Amazon.com and then type in "Victoria Glendinning"
3) Access National Trust, UK and then type in "Monks House"
4) Access National Trust, UK and then type in Sissinghurst Castle Garden.
Hope this helps!

Hi Georgene,
I wish you're nearby and I'll lend you my "The Hours." Actually, I read the book a year or two even before the movie was in the making. It was Michael Cunningham's bookseller.
Will have to look for "Portrait of a Marriage."
It would take a while before I can travel to England... but who knows. I was in London briefly six months ago but had no time to drift around.
G'day!

Hi Georgene,
Recently, I was in one of our local bookstores and saw "The Other Boleyn Girl" and flipped through the pages briefly. Found it interesting but I was already buying two books already. Now you got me interested again, will try to look for it.

True too, Pink101, and that you mentioned about suffrage (women's suffrage in particular), one English composer, Dame Ethel Smyth, was active as the suffragette composer, became friends with Woolf and Panshurst, for sometime. I wrote about her two years ago. Here's the link:

I have heard of Smyth some time in the past; although, I can't remember when. It was probably as I read some other work.
.
I enjoyed reading your link.
.
You do good work, Tel.
.
Thanks.
